Tanga & Pangani

The bustling port of Tanga is Tanzania’s second port after the urban centre of Dar es Salaam. Old colonial architecture and a few Arab, the fish market and beaches. Other attractions are Amboni cave, the most extensive limestone caves in East Africa. The caves were formed about 150 million years ago during Jurassic age under water.

Pangani is sometimes referred to as the home of Swahili culture. It is about 45 km south of Tanga on the estuary of the Pangani River which flows from Mount Kilimanjaro.
There are several Arab and colonial buildings remaining in town.  It is best to stay just outside Pangani at Mkoma Bay. Here there is a fantastic beach on which you can find ancient fossils and good access to Maziwe Island Maring Park which has some of the best snorkelling in the country.
